The cost of healthcare is skyrocketing at a rate many salaries simply can’t keep up with. Nearly half of all insured Americans are dependent on their employer for healthcare benefits. As the cost grows, more people are being priced out of insurance policies and more than 14 percent of Americans are not insured at all. They’ll have to pick up the tab to see a doctor. For the uninsured, operations such as open-heart surgery and kidney transplants are unaffordable, each costing well over a quarter of a million dollars. While more than 50 million people in the United States do not have health insurance, roughly 91 million are on a government-provided plan such as Medicare or Medicade.
